My Approach & Values

My approach to therapy combines my clients’ unique needs with the power of the therapeutic relationship. I embrace a strengths-based perspective that will build the resiliency individuals, couples, and families need to grow, heal, and have clarity about the future. I also draw from the theories of several forms of psychotherapy in endeavoring to understand and meet the individual needs of each person, couple, and family. These theories include, but are not limited to, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based, solution-focused, reality-based, client-centered, holistic, and family systems theories. The techniques that I utilize may include psychoeducation, imagery, role-play, relaxation, positive decision-making, dialogue, reframing of negative thoughts, and mindfulness.

As a clinician, I work collaboratively with each person to understand the issues and work towards autonomy that helps find/create balance in every area of life. I am dedicated to helping people develop increased self-awareness and acquiring healthy coping skills as they work towards improving their mental health and walking in the freedom they need and deserve. We will work together to establish realistic and attainable goals. These goals are flexible and may need to be modified throughout the therapeutic process as the needs of the individual, couple or family change. When cultivated and partnered with my diversity of experiences, the therapeutic process can focus on the relationship between mind, body, and spirit, to understand and address the issues that have caused distress in order to move beyond them and improve each person’s overall quality of life.

My philosophical approach is based on the belief that the client possesses the power to change, and it is my role to help the client become aware of how to understand and utilize that power. I challenge my clients to do the work to facilitate change in their lives. I encourage them to find their inner strength, resilience, and confidence. I offer them hope and the skills to conquer their issues, no matter how difficult they might seem. Ultimately, they are more self-aware and feel more comfortable in their own skin. This leads to greater vitality, peace of mind, and overall wholeness.

"Dr. Smith is one of the most caring and honest people I have ever met. Her feedback and insight were very intuitive and gave me hope when I felt hopeless. Dr. Smith helped me find the answers within myself, so that I could always access them outside of our sessions. She provided me with guidance on how to be a better daughter, sister, friend, and person. We worked on issues in both my personal and professional lives. I believe her experience as a counselor facilitated growth in me and empowered me to make such needed changes in my life. Dr. Smith was a Godsend and a true blessing to my life. "

"Dr. Smith’s thoughtful and objective guidance helped me believe in myself and regain confidence during a very, very dark time. I value our work together and her insights which helped me choose and make better decisions. As a result of therapy, I am more self-aware and understand my value and worth. Dr. Smith helped me find my voice and communicate my needs, which is something I was never comfortable doing. Therapy with Dr. Smith helped me refocus and get in a place of peace where I believe I can achieve whatever I set my sights on."

"Dr. Smith is an incredible School Counselor, mentor, and role model. She has impacted me in multiple ways from academic life to social life. I feel lucky every day to know that I have someone to rely on and speak to on a weekly basis. Dr. Smith is very professional and offers great suggestions in various situations. Without a doubt, I highly recommend Dr. Smith!"

"I have seen several therapists and was convinced that I would never find the right one for me. I never thought that I would find someone that understood me and my struggles. Boy was I wrong! Dr. Smith really helped me overcome an extremely dark period in my life. She is a great listener, very understandable, relate-able and recommended tools relevant to my situation. Even though my immediate problems and concerns have wavered, I still see Dr. Smith to this day, as she offers me refreshing perspectives and outlooks and pushes me to be the best version of myself. I would recommend anyone to see Dr. Smith because she is phenomenal at what she does."

Sha S.

"Dr. Smith is an amazing educator and person. She genuinely cares about you as a person, as she shows in her actions by going above and beyond to make sure you have a thorough understanding of your objective. I was privileged to have her as a teacher back in my days at John I. Leonard High School and I am so grateful for the impact she has had on my life. Even beyond the classroom, she made sure I stayed on the right track. During my high school days, I also was an accomplished athlete that was very heavy into sports. As you can imagine, there can be a lot of distractions and obstacles on your way to graduating and staying on task. I give Dr. Smith credit for making sure that I stayed focused on the task at hand. She had such an impact on my life that I chose to follow her footsteps and attend Florida State University. Having the opportunity to be taught, tutored, and counseled by Dr. Smith was one of the best experiences of my life. I can only hope someone else that is in need of an amazing experience and awesome educator would allow her to share her experience and knowledge with them as well. It will be one of the best decisions that they will make."

"During a tumultuous time for my family, my children and I struggled with many different issues. We had attempted counseling a few times but with no success. I tried the counseling services at my church and was connected with Dr. Smith. She listened and helped us learn the skills to use within our family. For the first time in a long time we finally felt more connected and had hope. If it were not for Dr. Smith's caring heart and willingness to walk alongside us during a very dark time, we would have lost hope quickly and possibly never restored our relationships. I cannot thank her enough for showing the Love of Christ by investing in our family and stepping into the chaos to help bring order and healing. I recommend her highly for any family in crisis and in need of a guiding hand."

Melissa P.

"My husband and I were having marital issues and had previously tried counseling. We decided to continue with Dr. Smith because of her patience, effectiveness and interpersonal skills. She was able to help us acknowledge and understand how we were both contributing to the pain we were experiencing. Dr. Smith was able to guide us in making informed decisions about our marriage and family and to comprehend the factors that affected our decisions. We learned how to effectively communicate and to agree to disagree. Through Dr. Smith's help, we made significant progress and healed individually and collectively as a couple. I am confident anyone will benefit from her skills as a therapist and from her ability to ease the stigma associated with seeking help. We recommend Dr. Smith without any reservation or hesitation.
